Tranquility

As I walk outside the birds are singing and the grass is dewy. The air smells clean. It feels cool outside. I hear a few people walking and talking. I love mornings like this. They make me want to just sit back and watch everything around me. My hair is blowing in the breeze and so are the trees. It is still early in the morning so noting is really happening yet.The sky is clear. The temperature is starting to heat up and more people are coming outside. There is a butterfly flying around me. It looks so beautiful and free. It reminds me of when I was a little girl with no responsibilities. It shows me how far I have come. I'm still growing into myself and figuring out who I am but I'm getting there!

Reading Assignments

"How to Mark a Book"
Marking a book definitely does not destroy a book. I think it helps the reader understand and become more engaged in what they are reading. If a book doesn't belong to you then you should write anything in it. This is the reason why I usually buy my own copy of books so I can dog ear pages and write things in the margins. This article opened my mind to new ideas. I never thought that writing in a book made it part of you. I guess in a way in kind of does. It helps you connect with what you are reading. Underlining, circling words, and writing key words are all good ways to keep yourself engaged in what your reading. For me, marking a book is a must when it comes to reading.

"Freewriting"
This article seemed kind of crazy to me. I didn't completely understand the point of it. The not crossing out mistakes concept threw me off too. In school, I was taught to erase, fix, cross out, or white out my mistakes. Freewriting is totally different from regular writing. Freewriting is " nonediting".  You keep writing and say whatever is on your mind. The point of it is to improve your writing.  I still don't really get it but it's worth a try.

 "Shitty First Drafts"
First drafts are usually not very good! No one is perfect, we all make mistakes. First drafts are usually not very good. That's why they're called first drafts! According to the author even good writers make them. That makes me feel a lot better about mine. The author describes the first draft as the "childs draft". The exercise where the author was talking about dropping voices in a jar was strange to me. I understand why she does it, I just don;t think it would work for me.

"How to Say Nothing in 500 words"
This article was very helpful to me because I find myself in this position all the time when I'm writing essays. I constantly check the word count. The author says to avoid writing obvious things because that is what everyone else will think of too. The author also talks about colorful words. I never thought about words as being colorful but I guess some words are more interesting than others. Some examples the author uses: fluttered, blistering, and muggy. He also talks about colorless words. Some of the words the author uses: aspects, factors, and attitudes.

All About Me!

My name is Jaslyn Brown. I was born on April 19, 1993 in Plantation, Florida. I am 18 years old. I graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School. I am majoring in communications in the fall. I am still not sure if it is for me but I am willing to try and see.  I have two cats, fish, and three birds. My cats are both females and their names are Mimi and Maddy.  I used to have turtles and a dog named max. I have a brother named Joaquin. I have a really big family and we are very close. When I was about seven, I got stitches in my chin because I fell off my bike. I have lived in Florida my whole life and I have lived in two different houses. For fun I spend time with my friends. I was a cheerleader in middle school and I took dance classes until my sophomore year of high school. I have been to Mexico, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, and Puerto Rico.  I am very shy. I try to be more friendly and outgoing but sometimes it is hard because I am so timid. Once I have time to get to know someone I am so much more open and not shy at all. I am Catholic and my family and I go to church almost every Sunday. My morals and values make me a better person. I am very hardworking and I don't give up on the things that I believe in. The types of music I listen to are rap, hip hop, and county (only Taylor Swift). My favorite foods are spaghetti and pizza. I hate tomatoes and cucumbers but I like ketchup and pickles. All of these things make me me and I wouldn't want to be anyone else!
